Cocktail Coasters for Every Occasion

One can always place a napkin under your cocktail glass to catch any of the moisture from the outside of the glass and keep it from dripping onto the furniture. If you are hosting a cocktail party, then one of the indispensable items you need to buy for the occasion is cocktail coasters. You can have these small items prepared especially for the event, if it is a birthday, anniversary, retirement or a celebration of a different kind.

There is a staggering array of materials used in making these coasters from paper to stone. Paper coasters are absorbent and very convenient to use when you have a large gathering. They are quite inexpensive in large quantities. In this category, you can choose from budget board coasters, which are designed for only one use and can then be thrown in the trash.

Cellulose coasters are made from inexpensive budget board, but are covered with two layers of tissue paper which gives them an elegant lacy appearance. Coasters that have the look of linen are also very popular for large gatherings. These are also made from budget board paper and contain a waxed paper backing to protect the furniture from scratches.

Small round aluminum cocktail coaster sets offer another inexpensive way to protect your furniture. These are usually silvery grey in color and come in a wide range of designs that will give you a sophisticated look. While they do protect the furniture, one of the disadvantages of this type of coaster is that they usually have smooth finishes.

This means that the water pools on the surface and runs off the side. The glasses can also easily stick to these coasters, but since they are made from aluminum, they won’t break when they fall off the bottom of the glass or cause a chip in the top of the table. Cork is the material of choice if you want inexpensive cocktail coasters that will absorb the liquid that drips from the glass.

Although they are usually round, you can get them in a variety of shapes and they can be imprinted with just about any design you can think of. Most of them are covered with a glossy heat resistant coating. Some coasters have cork centers and frames of wood, metal or stone.  Just about all absorbent coasters have a cork backing because of its protective ability and its no slip quality that prevents the coaster from sliding across the table, thus causing a spill.

Stone cocktail coasters are more expensive, but they are worth the extra cost in the advantages they bring with them. Porous stone, such as sandstone, is capable of holding as much as ¼ cup of liquid. Thus liquid soaks into the stone and the surface remains dry so that the glass won’t stick to it when it gets wet. The liquid evaporates into the air within minutes meaning that these coasters can be used and reused without needing to be wiped off to keep them dry.

Leather custom coasters are also quite elegant, as are those made from ceramic and porcelain. The leather coasters will not break and are usually imprinted with gold and silver seals or have embossed edgings. While black and green are the most popular colors for the leather coasters, you can basically get them in any color you wish to coordinate them with your furniture.
