The Vanished Art of Hat Manners: Tipping your Hat

You finally bought for yourself Kenny Chesney hats, which you have been lusting after for quite some time now. You were taken by the comfort of wearing the signature Kenny Chesney straw cowboy hat you see him wear during summer, especially when performing his hit "Summertime." And you were equally smitten by the glamour of the Kenny Chesney black cowboy hat he wore when he received the Entertainer of the Year award at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

And just to add to your collection, you also included in your shopping cart a Kenny Chesney baseball cap for those inevitable times when you have to attend baseball games and other casual get-togethers. After all, a modern man who is enamored of Western lifestyle cannot go out without a cowboy hat or a baseball cap.

Regardless of whatever Kenny Chesney hat you have on, there are certain rules of etiquette regarding tipping them. In this day and age, hat tipping is an archaic concept in most places (true cowboy country and Texas are definitely the exception), but you would do well to learn these classic rules.

How to Tip your Kenny Chesney Hat

The process of tipping your hat is actually quite simple. When you meet somebody who you want to tip your hat to, catch their attention first. Not too obtrusively or scandalously, however; you are a man, not a circus clown. Just catch their eye and sustain eye contact until you have finished the process.

Depending on your hand dexterity, take the rim of your cowboy hat or baseball cap with your thumb and pointing and middle fingers above your right or left eye. Then nod slightly while pulling your hat’s front brim to the top of your forehead while the back brim stays in place. The idea here is to tip, not to remove completely.

There is also a process where the hat is removed completely, if only for a brief period. Just lift your hat in the same manner abovementioned, lift it to the side of your head, and replace after a very short period. Remember to make this as smooth and as suave a movement as possible. It takes practice, but it is possible.

Maintain eye contact at all times, smile, and give a slight nod. For ladies passing you, give a little bow. This might seem out of place in the modern world, but women do like a little chivalry now and then. Besides, you can never lose with good manners in any place.

When to Tip your Kenny Chesney Black Cowboy Hat

Your Kenny Chesney black cowboy hat might seem glamorous, but not tipping it appropriately will make you look like a heel. Brush up on your hat etiquette, man!

There are basically just three vital things you need to remember when tipping your cowboy hat, or even your baseball cap. First, tip it when you encounter strangers who you want to acknowledge. Second, tip it to women. Third, and most important, never tip your cowboy hat to other men unless you know it is accepted as local custom in the area.

When you get directions from a stranger, especially if it is a woman, tip your hat. This is your way of thanking the stranger for his or her help. Do so with a smile and a nod.

When a woman thanks you, tip your hat. This is like saying "you are welcome." Besides, the eye contact is good for both of you, at least where taking the friendly acquaintance to the next level is concerned.

When you excuse yourself from a lady’s presence, tip your hat. It is a very simple gesture yet speaks volumes of your respect for her.

When you are walking with a friend and you both encounter a woman whom your friend knows and you do not, tip your hat. It is an acknowledgement of her presence and is a show of respect for your friend’s friend.

When you see your wife, tip your hat. Just because you have seen her in naked glory and morning gory does not mean that you cannot give her respect in public. This is even more imperative.

Through all these hat-tipping to women, remember not to tip your hat to other males, not unless you are absolutely sure that tipping your hat to males is an accepted custom. You see, in olden times, tipping your hat to other men was an insult to their masculinity. You have effectively told them that you consider them to be less than a man.

Just remember that when you tip your Kenny Chesney straw cowboy hat, you want to create goodwill, not ill will. If you always bear this in mind, you will be a gentleman-cowboy.
